AMENDED Pet Policy - amended 12/5/2007

The purpose of the pet policy is to promote the well-being of pets, their guardians, other residents of the Association and visitors.  In July and August, a sub-committee, comprised of non-Board member homeowners, was formed to determine whether our current policy was adequate.  While the recommendations from this sub-committee focus on rules and regulations, we also want to make some suggestions that will help all members of our community live well together.  Please keep in mind that this policy can be modified in the future if there are issues that were overlooked or if the changes are not supported by a majority of residents.  Below are some suggestions from the pet sub-committee for avoiding fines and penalties related to pets.
Suggestions for Happy, Healthy Pets (and Owners and Neighbors…)

  • Walk your dog.  There are many paths and sidewalks throughout our neighborhood.  Exercising your dog with a half-hour walk in this way can avoid most of the problems the pet policy addresses.  Most of the damage from pets comes from when their activity and waste is restricted to one area.  This is the single best thing a pet guardian can do with their dog.
  • Pick up your dog’s waste.  Pet guardian responsibility extends to knowing that pet urine can damage grass if concentrated in a small area.  Homeowners are encouraged to “spread it around” to prevent grass kill.  So walk your dog!
  • Walk your dog in the winter.  This is especially hard because of the cold, but damage from pet waste and urine in the winter is especially bad.  Pet waste can be easily seen when it lays on top of the snow.  Pet urine in the winter doesn't have any rain to help dilute it.
  • Check out Northfield's new dog park to exercise your dog.  It’s located on Highway 3 between the Northfield Cinema and the rodeo stands.  Dogs are social animals and may enjoy interacting with other dogs!
